Oscillation of a simple pendulum and its rapidity

 


 

  The pendulum experiment maybe setup with the help of the above illustrated equipment. After setup, the oscillation frequency with which the pendulum oscillates may be determined.

The time which it takes the simple pendulum to take one oscillation may be determined with a stop watch. The length of the string may be altered and then again, the time to make one oscillation is measured. If the string lenght is 99.4 cm, it passes through zero point once every second and therefore is called a "second pendulum".

Oscillation of a spring pendulum

 


 

  The spring pendulum maybe setup with the help of the above illustrated equipment. After setup, the oscillation frequency with which the spring pendulum oscillates may be determined.

The natural frequency of a spring pendulum and the dependence of this frequency on pendulum mass and the spring constant may be determined. Also, when a spring pendulum is forced to oscillate, the comparison between the excitation frequency and natural frequency maybe determined.

  Various experiments may be performed with the above illustrated equipment. Various plates with the dimensions 75 mm x 20 mm x 0.5 mm in Aluminium, lead, iron, copper and zinc are available. With the addition of a few chemicals, a whole range of experiments may be performed

Behavior of the coupled pendula

  By putting together the following equipment list, we can observe the behavior of the coupled pendula, determine and measure the oscillation period of the pendula in the same and opposite directions

When we couple the pendula, energy is transferred from the first to the second, which in turn starts to oscillate. The energy loss of the first pendulum results in a decrease in its amplitude and therefore, finally to the rest position. The second pendulum has reached its highest amplitude. The energy transfer restarts, this tinme from the second pendulum to the first.
